Shrinking Your Plastic Footprint

Shoppers in the market for bath and shower products may soon be able to narrow their selection by comparing not just color and price, but also how much plastic various manufacturers use. A cosmetics maker from the United Kingdom is the first business to agree to measure its “plastic footprint,” using tools developed by the Plastic Disclosure Project (PDP).

“If you don’t measure something, you can’t manage it,” explains Doug Woodring, founder of the international project that
launched at the 2011 Clinton Global Initiative. As a first step toward plastic reduction, PDP encourage…

and Opportunities of Plastic

UNEP estimates that up to 80% of the plastic in the ocean comes from land. Plastic is lightweight, durable, inexpensive, and easy to mold. As a result, almost all companies and industries use or sell plastic material or products in some way. Plastic is the one man-made product that links us all to the ocean in some way. Does your company treat plastic as a secondary raw material? Do your consumers feel “let down” when throwing yo…

Keeping the Sea Safe from Plastic

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a vortex of trash in the North Pacific, spans hundreds of miles. The waste, much of it plastic, is suspended like confetti under the waves and on the surface. “It’s so dilute, it’s probably impossible to clean up,” says Henry Carson, a professor of Marine Science at the University of Hawaii. “Our best bet is to start by not putting any more plastic in.”

Keeping litter out of the ocean isn’t easy, though, and most biodegradable plastics don’t break down well in marine environments—they require the relative warmth of soil or a compost heap. A new plastic on the market degrades quickly both on land and in seawater.
