Valuing Plastic Report

Valuing Plastic - The Business Case for Measuring, Managing, and Disclosing Plastic Use in the Consumer Goods Industry

In June, 2014, at the UN Environmental Assembly in Nairobi, the Plastic Disclosure Project (a program of Ocean Recovery Alliance), Trucost and UNEP launched "Valuing Plastic - The Business Case for Measuring, Managing, and Disclosing Plastic Use in the Consumer Goods Industry."  This was a world-first report, to show the natural capital cost of plastic use within the consumer goods industry.  It is not a name and shame report, but instead, a baseline number for our communities and businesses to work with in order to better understand how to make plastic use more efficient, particularly after its intended initial purpose, so that there is a reduced waste footprint.

The report articulates the business case for measuring, managing and disclosing plastic use, underlined by the new research which identifies $75 billion of annual natural capital costs of plastic use by the consumer goods sector, and annual estimated impact to the ocean of $13bn.
