Samsung Cross Bosphorus Swim Adopts Plastic Reduction Methodology

    The Turkish Olympic Committee, which organises the iconic Samsung Cross Bosphorus Swim, has announced its participation in a programme to reduce the plastic waste produced at the event.


    Now in its 30th year, the Cross Bosphorus Swim had just 68 swimmers for its first edition in 1989. It now attracts thousands from around the world and potential participants need to win a place through a lottery or go through a recognised event partner such as SwimTrek. The Bosphorus runs through the heart of Istanbul and separates Europe from Asia and so offers a unique opportunity for regular swimmers to swim between continents. Because the Bosphorus is such a busy and important shipping lane, crossing it is only possible as part of an organised event when boat traffic is suspended for a short period of time.


    The plastic reduction programme is an initiative by the Ocean Recovery Alliance, which has developed the Plastic Disclosure Project (PDP). PDP is a programme for companies and institutions to measure their baseline use of plastic, how much they recover or recycle, or how much recycled content they use.

      January 25, 2018 - Mr. Douglas Woodring, Founder and Managing Director of Ocean Recovery Alliance, has been awarded 2018 Prince’s Prize for Innovative Philanthropy by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco.


      Ocean Recovery Alliance focuses on bringing together new ways of thinking, technologies, creativity, collaboration, and initiatives to help improve the ocean environment.


      The Award is a global initiative jointly developed by The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and The Tocqueville Foundation. Its goal is to highlight projects and initiatives that have triggered innovative activity in the field of philanthropy, seeking out individuals and organizations that inspire others and demonstrate strong impact or potential impact.


      Mr. Woodring received the award for his years of dedication, focus and persistence on reducing plastic pollution, and by doing so with creative, scalable programs that can be replicated across borders. It is one of the first NGOs to work with both the UN Environment (UNEP) and the World Bank on their respective programs aimed at reducing plastic pollution.

        In their quest to lead with solutions, Starboard has joined Ocean Recovery Alliance and their Plastic Disclosure Project (PDP), which helps Starboard to understand its complete plastic use and waste footprint within the communities it serves. Starboard exports its products to over 70 countries, and has now calculated its use of plastics of every variety in boards, accessories, apparel, packaging, and operations for both 2017 and 2018. The methodology of the PDP allows a company to understand and quantify areas where recycled content, increased material recovery, or use of eco-innovation changes can be made in product lines for so that its plastic footprint can be reduced within its operations. Over the past 12 months, Starboard has already replaced over 21.2 % of virgin plastic which would have been used, in favor of recycled plastic, and also reduced overall plastic consumption by 6.5% by using more bio materials.
